Linear Arrangement
Seat people in a straight row (or two facing rows) from clues: fix the facing direction, place the definite clues first, branch into cases, and strike out the case that breaks a clue.
What you will be able to do
I can tell left from right for a person facing north, south or the other row.
I can turn each clue into a quick sketch and decide which clue to place first.
I can build cases and eliminate the wrong ones to reach the single arrangement.
I can answer position, count, pair and odd-one-out questions from the final row.
Key points
Facing north: left = west, right = east. On a north-up page this is the same as your own left and right.
Facing south: left = east, right = west. Everything flips compared with the page.
In a row of n, the k-th from one end is (n − k + 1)-th from the other end.
If two persons are at places p and q, then |p − q| − 1 persons sit between them.
Place definite clues first (ends, k-th from an end, middle), then pair clues, and use "not" clues last to cut cases.
A gap clue ("two persons between A and B") does not tell who is on the left: draw both cases.
With mixed facing, judge every left or right from the person named after "of" in the clue.
In two facing rows, a person and the one facing them have opposite left and right.
Full explanation
Movie night
Riya has booked six seats in one row for her friends. Esha wants to sit next to Asha, Bharat wants an end seat, and Dev refuses to sit beside Charu. Where should each person sit?
Exams turn this everyday problem into a puzzle. This topic gives you a method that works every time, not luck.
What the question gives you
A seating question tells you three things:
How many persons and their names.
The shape: one straight row, or two rows facing each other.
The facing: north, south, or mixed (some north, some south).
Then come 5 to 10 clues and 3 to 5 questions on the same setup.
Left and right depend on facing
Left and right belong to the person, not to your page. Draw the page with north at the top.
Facing north: the person's left is west, which is your left too.
Facing south: the person's left is east, which is your right.
Turn clues into sketches
Write each clue as a tiny row with blanks. Toppers never hold clues in their head.
"A is second to the right of B" (facing north): B _ A.
"Two persons sit between A and B": A _ _ B or B _ _ A, two cases.
"A sits somewhere to the right of B": B … A.
The method: Fix, Link, Cut
Fix: place clues that name a seat: an end, k-th from an end, the middle.
Link: attach persons tied to someone already placed ("A is immediately right of C").
Branch: if a clue allows two places, draw both cases.
Cut: use "not" clues and leftover persons to strike out cases.
Never start with a clue about two persons nobody has placed yet.
Worked example
Six friends A, B, C, D, E and F sit in a row facing north.
C is third from the left end.
Only one person sits between C and E.
A sits immediately to the right of E.
B sits at an extreme end.
D is not an immediate neighbour of C.
Clue 1 fixes C in seat 3. Clue 2 puts E in seat 1 or seat 5, so we get two cases. Clue 3 puts A just right of E. Clue 4 sends B to the free end in each case.
Finishing the example
In Case 2 the free seats are 2 and 4, and both touch C, so D has nowhere to go: Case 2 is out. In Case 1 the free seats are 4 and 5; D cannot take seat 4 (next to C), so D takes seat 5 and F takes seat 4.
Final row: E A C F D B. Now any question is a quick read: F is second to the left of B, and 2 persons sit between A and D.
Two formulas for rows
For a row of $n$ persons:
Position from the other end: $k \to n - k + 1$.
Persons between seats $p$ and $q$: $|p - q| - 1$.
Example: In a row of 21, Kavya is 8th from the left. From the right she is $21 - 8 + 1 = 14$th.
Mixed facing
When some face north and some face south, every clue is read from the facing of the person after "of". "D is immediately to the right of C" uses C's right. If C faces south, C's right is west on your page.
Two rows facing each other
Row 1 faces south and row 2 faces north. A person and the one opposite form a column. If Q faces B, then the person on Q's right sits opposite the person on B's left.
Exam shortcuts
Write the facing above your sketch before reading clue 1.
Pick the clue with a fixed seat first.
A gap clue means two cases; draw both at once.
"Not" clues are for cutting cases, not for starting.
After solving, check every clue once against the final row; it takes 15 seconds and saves the whole set.
Back to movie night
Riya wrote the facing (all towards the screen), fixed Bharat at an end, linked Esha with Asha, and used "Dev not beside Charu" to cut a case. One arrangement was left, and everyone was happy. You can now do the same in an exam.
Concepts and terms
Facing decides left and right
Left and right always belong to the person, not to the page. A person facing south has the east on the left.
Definite and relative clues
A definite clue fixes a seat (third from the left end). A relative clue only links two persons (B is second to the right of A).
Case method
When a clue allows two places, draw both rows side by side and carry on; a later clue will break one of them.
Two facing rows
Seats in the same column face each other. Row 1 faces south, row 2 faces north, so their rights point opposite ways.
Did you know
Bank PO mains papers often give 3 to 5 questions on one seating puzzle, so one correct arrangement earns several marks at once.
Six persons can sit in a row in 6 × 5 × 4 × 3 × 2 × 1 = 720 ways; good clues cut all of them down to one.
Memory tricks
Facing south — South swaps sides — Facing south, a person's left is your right on a north-up page.
Order of clues — Fix, Link, Cut — Fixed seats first, linking clues next, "not" clues last to cut cases.

What is the "case method" in seating puzzles?
When a clue allows two seats, draw both possible rows and continue; later clues will break one, leaving the single arrangement.
In two rows facing each other, how is the right of a person related to the right of the person facing them?
They point in opposite directions: row 1 faces south (right = west), row 2 faces north (right = east).
Long answer questions (1)
Six friends A, B, C, D, E and F sit in a row facing north. C is third from the left end; only one person sits between C and E; A is immediately right of E; B sits at an extreme end; D is not an immediate neighbour of C. Find the arrangement and show why only one case survives.
C is in seat 3. E is in seat 1 or 5 (two cases); A follows E. Case 1: E A C _ _ B. Case 2: B _ C _ E A.
In Case 2 the free seats 2 and 4 both touch C, so D cannot sit: the case fails. In Case 1, D avoids seat 4, so D = 5 and F = 4.
Final: E A C F D B.

Circular and Square Tables
Seat people around a round or square table: learn which way is left for persons facing the centre or outward, fix one person to remove rotations, use opposite seats and corners, and handle mixed facing.
What you will be able to do
I can find left and right around a table for persons facing the centre or facing outward.
I can fix one person and place the rest using opposite seats and relative clues.
I can convert k-th to the left into (n − k)-th to the right and count persons between both ways.
I can solve square-table and mixed-facing puzzles used in bank exams.
Key points
Facing the centre: left = clockwise, right = anticlockwise.
Facing outward: left = anticlockwise, right = clockwise.
A round table has no ends and no fixed first seat, so place one person anywhere to start.
With n seats, k-th to the left of X is (n − k)-th to the right of X.
Opposite seats exist only for an even number of seats; they are n/2 places apart either way.
Persons between X and Y counted both ways add up to n − 2.
Square table with 8 seats: 4 corners and 4 middles alternate; a corner's neighbours are both middles, and opposite a corner is a corner.
With mixed facing, read every left or right from the facing of the person after "of".
Full explanation
Diwali dinner
Nani has laid a round table for eight on Diwali. Mama must sit opposite Papa, Meera wants to be second to Nani's right, and the twins must not sit together. A round table looks harder than a row because it has no ends. By the end of this topic you will seat everyone in under three minutes.
Facing the centre: left is clockwise
Imagine you sit at the bottom of the table facing the centre (towards the top of the page). Your left hand points to the left of the page, and moving that way round the table is clockwise.
Facing the centre: left = clockwise, right = anticlockwise.
Facing outward: everything reverses
If everyone faces away from the centre, turn the rule round: right = clockwise, left = anticlockwise. Same table, same seats, opposite words.
Three quick rules
With $n$ seats, $k$-th to the left $=$ $(n-k)$-th to the right.
Opposite is $\frac{n}{2}$ seats away (only when $n$ is even).
Persons between X and Y one way plus the other way $= n - 2$.
Example: 8 persons facing the centre; Q is 3rd to the right of P. Then Q is $8 - 3 = 5$th to the left of P, and between them sit 2 persons one way and $8 - 2 - 2 = 4$ the other way.
Start by fixing one person
A round table can be turned without changing any clue, so the first person you place can go anywhere. Put the person who appears in the most clues at the top, then use opposite clues (they fix a seat at once) and k-th to the left or right clues.
Worked example
Eight persons A to H sit around a round table facing the centre.
E sits opposite A.
B sits second to the right of A.
G sits immediately to the left of E.
H is an immediate neighbour of A but not of B.
D sits second to the left of H.
F is not an immediate neighbour of D.
Put A at the top. E is opposite. Right of A is anticlockwise, so B is two seats anticlockwise. Left of E is clockwise, so G is next to E clockwise.
Finishing the example
A's neighbours are the seat clockwise of A and the seat between A and B. H must touch A but not B, so H takes the seat clockwise of A. D is second to H's left (clockwise), so D is two seats clockwise from H. C and F fill the last two seats; F cannot touch D, so F takes the seat beside A and C sits next to D.
Clockwise from A: A, H, C, D, E, G, B, F.
Square tables
A square table for eight has 4 corner seats and 4 middle seats, and they alternate as you go round. Everyone faces the centre, so the clockwise rule still works. Extra facts toppers use:
Both neighbours of a corner person sit in middles, and the other way round.
Opposite a corner is a corner; opposite a middle is a middle.
Mixed facing
In bank mains puzzles some persons face the centre and some face outward. Then left and right change from person to person. Note each person's facing with an arrow the moment you learn it, and read "X is to the right of Y" from Y's arrow.
Back to the Diwali table
Nani fixed herself at the top, sat Mama opposite Papa, counted two seats anticlockwise for Meera (Nani faces the centre, so right is anticlockwise), and the twins took seats apart. The table was set before the diyas were lit.
Concepts and terms
Clockwise rule
Sit facing the centre and your left hand points the way the clock's hands move. Face outward and it reverses.
Rotation does not matter
Turning the whole table keeps every clue true, so the first person can go anywhere; place them at the top.
Opposite seats
With 8 seats, the person opposite is 4 places away either way. With an odd number of seats, nobody sits exactly opposite.
Square table pattern
Going round, corner and middle seats alternate. Corner persons face the centre diagonally; middle persons face the centre straight.
Did you know
There are only (n − 1)! different ways to seat n people at a round table, because turning the table gives the same seating. For 8 people that is 5,040.
King Arthur's legendary Round Table was round so that no knight sat at the head; every seat was equal.
Memory tricks
Facing the centre — Centre: Left is Clock — Facing the centre, left goes clockwise.
Left to right switch — k left = (n − k) right — Going the other way round the table, add up to n.

On a square table of 8, can two corner persons be immediate neighbours? Explain.
No. Going round the table corner and middle seats alternate, so a corner's neighbours are always middle seats.
Long answer questions (1)
Eight persons A to H sit around a round table facing the centre. E is opposite A; B is second to the right of A; G is immediately left of E; H is an immediate neighbour of A but not of B; D is second to the left of H; F is not an immediate neighbour of D. Find the arrangement.
Fix A at the top; E is opposite. Right is anticlockwise, so B is two seats anticlockwise of A; left is clockwise, so G is next to E clockwise. H takes the seat clockwise of A (the other neighbour seat touches B). D is two seats clockwise of H. F avoids D, so F is between A and B and C is next to D.
Clockwise: A, H, C, D, E, G, B, F.
