Full explanation

What this paper is

This is a full annual-examination paper for Class 9 English: 80 marks, three hours, 24 questions in three sections - reading, grammar and writing, and literature.

Half the marks are on skills that no lesson teaches directly - reading an unseen passage, grammar in context, and writing to a format. The other half is on Kaveri.

The blueprint

Section What it tests Questions Marks
A Two unseen passages Q1-Q2 20
B Grammar (10 x 1), letter (5), analytical paragraph (5) Q3-Q14 20
C Two extracts (2 x 5), six short answers (6 x 3), two long answers (2 x 6) Q15-Q24 40
24 80

What this particular paper leans on

Reading: the return of repair (discursive), and a library's new children's corner with a table. Grammar: noun clauses, present perfect, reported exclamations, passive, modals, conditionals with imperatives, phrasal verbs, prefixes, binomials and determiners. Writing: a crafts-club request or a complaint to the Postmaster; an analytical paragraph on school clubs or a week of desert heat. Literature: Twin Melodies, I Cannot Remember My Mother, Winds of Change, Vitamin M, Follow That Dream, Canvas of Soil, A Friend Found in Music, Believe in Yourself, How I Taught My Grandmother to Read, The Pot Maker, World of Limitless Possibilities and Carrier of Words.

How to spend the three hours

  • 15 minutes reading the paper and choosing your options.
  • 40 minutes on the two passages - read the questions first, then the passage.
  • 10 minutes on the grammar questions.
  • 40 minutes on the letter and the analytical paragraph, with a two-minute plan for each.
  • 60 minutes on Section C, the half of the paper that rewards knowing the lessons.
  • 15 minutes checking spelling, tense and the format of the letter.

Where marks are lost

  • Lifting whole sentences from the passage when the question asks you to explain.
  • Missing the letter format. Sender's address, date, receiver, subject, salutation, body, closing - format carries a mark of its own.
  • Describing every figure in an analytical paragraph. Pick out the trend, the largest change and one comparison, then conclude.
  • Retelling the story in a long answer. The question asks for a judgement - a trait, a theme, a change - supported from the lesson.
  • Going far over the word limit. A 3-mark answer of 120 words loses marks for expression, not gains.
