About This Half-Yearly Paper

An 80-mark paper over the first seven chapters, in the shape a school uses, with a marking scheme for every written answer.

What you will be able to do

  • Sit an 80-mark paper in three hours in one sitting.
  • Spend marks in proportion: one minute or so for a one-mark row.
  • Mark your own written answers against the scheme given.
  • Turn each lost mark into the chapter it came from.
  • Read a case-based passage once before looking at its parts.

Full explanation

What this paper is

This is a practice paper, not a board paper. Class 8 sits no board exam, and the books carry no marked test of their own. The shape here is the one a school commonly uses, so that sitting it feels like the real thing.

What it covers

Chapters 1 to 7. Investigating and fair tests, the invisible living world, health, the magnetic and heating effects of a current, forces, pressure and winds, and the particulate nature of matter. Nothing from the second half of the book appears.

How the 80 marks are laid out

Twenty one-mark questions with four options. Twelve two-mark questions and six three-mark ones, all written. One case-based question worth six, built on a passage. Two long answers worth six each.

How to spend three hours

Give the twenty one-mark rows about twenty-five minutes in total. Do not argue with yourself over one of them; mark it and come back. Leave a clear half hour at the end for the two long answers, which carry twelve marks between them.

Marking your own work

Every written answer here has a marking scheme beside it, broken down mark by mark. Mark yourself against it honestly. A point you meant but did not write down does not score, and that is the most useful lesson a practice paper teaches.

What to do with a lost mark

Write the chapter number beside it. When you have marked the whole paper, look at which number appears most often. That chapter is where your next hour of revision belongs, and the paper has then done its real work.
