How to Use the Half-Yearly Paper
An 80-mark rehearsal over the first seven chapters, with a marking scheme on every question so the result points at a chapter rather than at a score.
What you will be able to do
- Sit an 80-mark paper in three hours without notes.
- Mark your own work against a scheme rather than an impression.
- Turn the marks you dropped into a named chapter to reread.
Full explanation
What this paper is
One paper of 80 marks covering the first seven chapters, which is the half of the book you have finished. Three hours, closed book. It is not a board paper, because Class 8 has none; it is a rehearsal, and the point of a rehearsal is to find out what is not ready while there is still time.
How the 80 marks are laid out
Twenty one-mark questions with four options, then twelve two-mark questions and six three-mark ones. After those comes a case study worth 6 in four parts. Last are two six-mark questions that want an explanation rather than a number, and they are last for a reason: they take the most thought.
Sitting it properly
Three hours is generous for 41 questions, so the risk is not running out of time but hurrying the parts that carry the most marks. Give the two six-mark questions twenty minutes each. Keep the book shut the whole way through, because a paper sat with the book open measures nothing.
Marking it
Every question has a marking scheme that says where each mark sits. Use it exactly, and give yourself nothing for an answer that is right by luck with no working. A mark scheme that rewards a lucky guess is worse than no mark scheme at all.
What to do with the result
Write the chapter number beside every mark you dropped, then add them up by chapter. One chapter will almost always account for more than its share, and that chapter is your revision plan. Do not reread all seven.
