How to Sit the Annual Practice Paper
A short guide to the annual paper: what each part holds, how to spend the two hours, and a checklist of the skills the whole book has taught.
What you will be able to do
- I can plan my time across the three parts of a paper
- I can write out my working instead of the answer alone
- I can look back over the whole book and name what I can do
Full explanation
Two hours for the whole book
This paper covers all fifteen chapters of Maths Mela, with more from the later ones. You have two hours and fifty marks.
Read the whole paper first
Turn every page before you begin. Tick the questions you can already do and start there. Confidence builds speed.
Part A goes first and fast
Part A holds twenty questions of one mark. About half a minute each is right. Leave a hard one and come back.
Part B in one or two sentences
Part B holds nine questions of two marks. Say the step, then the answer. A bare number often loses a mark.
Part C is where working pays
The last two questions carry six marks each. Write every sum out. Each step can earn its own mark.
Watch your units and your order
Write kg, g, ml, cm, m or square metres beside the answer. On a grid, count along first and up second.
Save the last ten minutes
Stop with about ten minutes to go. Add your sums again. Make sure no question has been skipped.
About this paper
This paper follows the pattern most schools use for an annual test. It is not a board paper. Class 5 has no board exam.
