How to Sit the Annual Practice Paper
A guide to the annual Science paper: what each part holds, how to revise twelve chapters, and a checklist of the year.
What you will be able to do
- I can plan three hours across five parts of a paper
- I can describe a fair test and say what it changes
- I can write a unit beside every measurement
- I can revise twelve chapters by testing myself, not rereading
Full explanation
Three hours, eighty marks, twelve chapters
This paper reaches across the whole book, from the scientific method to the planets. Most of it comes from the second half, because the half-yearly already examined the first.
Revise by testing yourself
Do not reread twelve chapters. Read your key points and mind maps, then close the book and try to say them back. Recalling fixes a thing in memory; rereading only feels as though it does.
Part A is twenty quick marks
Twenty questions of one mark. About half a minute each.
Part B wants two points
Twelve questions of two marks. Make two separate points, because one mark usually sits on each.
Part C wants three
Six questions of three marks. Three things, counted before you write.
Part D is the experiment
Six marks in four parts, worth one, one, two and two. Read it twice.
Part E is the long answer
Two questions of six marks. Plan each in the margin first.
Always write the unit
A number alone says nothing. Thirty-seven is not a temperature; 37 degrees Celsius is. Write the unit every time.
If it asks for a fair test
Say what you would keep the same, what one thing you would change, and what you would measure. Marks sit on all three.
Keep fifteen minutes back
Stop a quarter of an hour early. Check nothing is blank, that every measurement has a unit, and that Part C really has three points.
About this paper
This paper follows the pattern most schools use for an annual test. It is not a board paper. Class 6 has no board exam.
