How to Sit the Annual Practice Paper
A guide to the annual English paper: how it differs from the half-yearly, how to spend three hours on all sixteen chapters of Poorvi, and what the long answers want.
What you will be able to do
- Plan three hours across a paper that draws on all sixteen chapters.
- Answer a question that asks you to compare two chapters.
- Use the paper to find which chapters have faded.
Full explanation
Three hours, eighty marks, sixteen chapters
This paper draws on the whole of Poorvi, from A Bottle of Dew to National War Memorial. The half-yearly asked about eight chapters; this one can ask about any.
Part A is twenty quick marks
Twenty questions of one mark. Half a minute each. A question from a chapter you read in June is not harder, only older.
Part B wants two points
Twelve questions of two marks. Two sentences is usually right, and the marking scheme splits each one in half.
Part C wants a reason
Six questions of three marks. A fact on its own will not score here. Each answer needs the fact and then why it matters.
Part D is the case study
One question of six marks in four parts. The first two are short recall and the last two are yours to argue. Read the whole situation first.
Part E asks you to range
Two questions of six marks, and both reach across several chapters at once. These are the questions a last-minute reading cannot answer, because they want you to put two chapters side by side. Spend four minutes planning each.
This is not a board paper
Class 6 has no board exam. This follows the eighty-mark written pattern most schools use.
What it is really for
Mark it, then list the chapters your wrong answers came from. The oldest chapters on that list are the ones to reread first.
