How to Sit the Half-Yearly Practice Paper
A guide to the half-yearly English paper: what each part holds, how to spend three hours on it, and a checklist of the first eight chapters of Poorvi.
What you will be able to do
- Plan three hours across five parts of a paper.
- Tell what a two-mark answer owes a reader from what a six-mark answer owes.
- Check the first eight chapters before sitting the paper.
Full explanation
Three hours, eighty marks
This paper covers the first eight chapters, from A Bottle of Dew to What a Bird Thought. Read the whole paper once before you write anything.
Part A is twenty quick marks
Twenty questions of one mark. Give each about half a minute. If one will not come, leave it and return at the end.
Part B wants two points
Twelve questions of two marks. Two sentences is usually right. The marking scheme splits each one in half, so a single good point earns half the marks and two earn all of them.
Part C wants three
Six questions of three marks. Here a list is not enough. Each needs a reason as well as a fact.
Part D is the case study
One question of six marks with four parts. The first two parts are short and the last two want your own thinking. Read the whole situation before answering any part of it.
Part E is the long answers
Two questions of six marks. Both ask you to compare two chapters. Plan for four minutes before you start writing, because a comparison that only describes one side cannot score well.
This is not a board paper
Class 6 has no board exam. This paper follows the eighty-mark written pattern most schools use, with twenty more marks usually given internally.
What it is really for
A wrong answer here is worth more than a right one, because it tells you which chapter to reread while there is still time.
