⚡ Veda Bites

The whole idea, one bite at a time

Veda Bites are swipeable micro-lessons — each one teaches exactly one idea. Here's a taste from this kit; the app has the full deck.

💡 Key Idea

Eight characteristics

The whole list.

Move, feed, grow, breathe, excrete, answer stimuli, reproduce, and in the end die.

💡 Tip

One test is never enough

Why the list is needed.

A car moves and is not alive. A tree stays put and is. Movement alone settles nothing.

💡 Key Idea

Opening, winding, trapping

Plants move without travelling.

A flower opens, a climber winds round a support, and Drosera closes its hairs on an insect.

💡 Key Idea

Germinated

The word.

A seed that has turned into a sprout is said to have germinated.

💡 Key Idea

Four identical pots

The design.

Same pots, same soil, same seeds. Only the conditions differ, so the conditions get the blame.

💡 Tip

Write the prediction down

Before you look.

A prediction on paper cannot be quietly adjusted to match what you saw.

1

Eight Things the Living Do

A shell that never stirs can still be part of something alive. No single test settles it, so the living are told apart by a list of eight things they all do, plants included.

  • Everything around us can be sorted into two kinds, the living and the non-living.
  • Living beings move, feed, grow, breathe, excrete, answer stimuli, reproduce and die.
  • Where one of those is missing, what you are looking at is not a living being.

2

Four Pots, and What a Seed Needs

Four pots of bean seeds, each kept differently, sort out what germination actually needs. Water and air turn out to be essential, and sunlight, surprisingly, does not.

  • A seed that has turned into a sprout is said to have germinated.
  • Four identical pots, each kept differently, let one condition be judged at a time.
  • Germination of bean seeds needs the right amount of water together with air.

3

Which Way a Plant Grows

Turn a seedling upside down and it does not stay that way. Shoots head upward and lean towards light; roots head downward whatever you do, and three beakers show it.

  • An upright seedling grows its root downwards and its shoot upwards.
  • An inverted seedling bends: the root turns down again and the shoot turns up again.
  • With light from one side only, the shoot grows towards it and the root still goes down.

A Bean Plant, Seed to Seed

Plant one bean and watch for three months. It germinates, puts out leaves, flowers, sets a pod of seeds and then dies, and those seeds start the whole thing again.

  • Plant a bean seed, give it suitable conditions, and watch it for three months.
  • The stages run seed, germination, leaves, flowers, fruit, and then the death of the plant.
  • Once parts of the flower have dried, the remaining parts develop into the fruit.

5

A Mosquito and a Frog

Four stages each, and in both the young look nothing like the adult. One cycle runs entirely in stagnant water; the other starts in a pond and ends on land as well as in it.

  • Mosquitoes pass through four stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult.
  • The female mosquito drops her eggs onto water, or right beside it, so round it goes again.
  • Larvae and pupae live in water but need air, so they come up to the surface for it.
