⚡ Veda Bites

The whole idea, one bite at a time

Veda Bites are swipeable micro-lessons — each one teaches exactly one idea. Here's a taste from this kit; the app has the full deck.

💡 Key Idea

Comfort is not company

The best booth in the stables.

Gajaraj has a king who is fond of him and orders on his care. He is still sad, because none of it is somebody to play with.

💡 Key Idea

The story draws the line itself

A good caretaker. Not a friend.

The mahout feeds him, bathes him and is kind to him. The story says in one sentence that this is not the same as friendship, and then spends the rest proving it.

💡 Key Idea

How it starts

Food pushed across a floor.

No speech and no introductions. A tired, hungry stray, and an elephant who moves some of his own dinner towards it. Everything else follows from that.

💡 Key Idea

Four letters at the front

An opposite you can build.

Not every opposite is a separate word. Kind becomes unkind, correct becomes incorrect, appear becomes disappear. A small piece at the front does all the work.

💡 Key Idea

Why prefixes are easy to read

The word underneath stays whole.

Kind is still sitting inside unkind, untouched, unhappy. Nothing is spelled differently, so you can always see what has been reversed.

💡 Key Idea

Un-, in-, dis- or mis-

There is no rule for which.

Unhappy is right and inhappy is not a word. Which prefix a word takes has to be learned by meeting it, which is the only hard part of this.

What you'll study, topic by topic

1

The Story: The Unlikely Best Friends

A royal elephant has everything except company. A stray dog wanders in one evening, and what grows between them turns out to matter more than food.

  • Gajaraj has the finest stall in the royal stables and is carefully looked after, yet he is unhappy because he has nobody to play with.
  • The mahout feeds him and bathes him every day. The story is careful to call him a good caretaker and not a friend.
  • A hungry stray dog wanders in one evening, and the elephant pushes some of his own food towards it.

Words at Work: Opposites Built with Prefixes, and Three Pasts

How a few letters at the front of a word can reverse it, and the three different ways English has of telling you that something already happened.

  • Not every opposite is a different word. Many are built by putting a few letters in front of the word you already have.
  • Un- is the commonest: unhappy, unkind, untouched. In- gives incorrect, dis- gives disappear, and mis- gives misuse.
  • The prefix does not change the word it joins. Kind stays whole inside unkind, which is what makes these easy to read.

Speak, Listen and Write about Friends Like and Unlike You

Saying how two people are alike and how they differ, in one piece of writing, using the small words that hold a comparison together.

  • A comparison does two jobs at once: it says what is shared and it says what is not.
  • Writing only the similarities makes two people sound identical, and writing only the differences makes them sound like strangers.
  • And joins things that agree. But joins things that pull against each other, and it is the word a comparison usually turns on.
