⚡ Veda Bites

The whole idea, one bite at a time

Veda Bites are swipeable micro-lessons — each one teaches exactly one idea. Here's a taste from this kit; the app has the full deck.

💡 Key Idea

Science Works Through Models

Nature is too complicated to study all at once. So what does science do?

A model is a simplified stand-in for a real system, built to answer one particular question. It keeps the few things that decide the answer and deliberately leaves out the rest.

↳ A model keeps only what one question depends on, and lets the rest of the real system go.

⭐ Important Fact

The Question Comes First

The step almost everyone skips.

You cannot decide what belongs in a model until you know what the model is for. Without a stated question there is no way to separate an important detail from a decorative one.

↳ No question, no model — the question decides everything that follows.

✏️ Example

Sorting a Cricket Shot

A batter hits a six. What actually decides where it lands?

The question is whether the ball clears the boundary without touching the ground first.

↳ Change anything in the left column and the ball lands elsewhere; change the right column and nothing moves.

💡 Key Idea

Words with Fixed Meanings

Why is science so fussy about words?

Everyday words such as force, work, cell and reaction carry narrow, specific meanings in science.

↳ Precision in language is what lets science be a shared activity.

⚖️ Comparison

Same Word, Different Job

Everyday word or scientific word?

↳ Carrying the everyday meaning into a science answer describes the wrong thing entirely.

🧠 Memory Trick

My Very Fine Instrument

Four symbols worth knowing cold.

My Very Fine Instrument runs in the same order.

↳ m, v, F, I - and each one drags a defined unit along with it.

Why Science Builds Models

The natural world is far too complicated to study in every detail, so science works with models — simplified stand-ins that keep only what matters for one particular question and deliberately leave the rest out, then add…

  • A model is a stripped-down stand-in for a real system that keeps only those features the question at hand depends on, because nature carries…
  • Every model is built on assumptions — details the person building it has decided, on purpose, to leave out.
  • Leaving out a detail is not an error. It is a deliberate choice that keeps a problem simple enough to solve while still allowing a useful an…

The Language of Science: Words, Symbols and Units

Science fixes narrow meanings for familiar words, writes quantities as agreed symbols carrying defined units, measures against international standards rather than local objects, and treats an equation as a compact statem…

  • Science narrows the meaning of familiar words, so force, work, cell and reaction all carry specific and fixed senses that differ from the wa…

Laws, Theories, Prediction and Estimation

Science organises what it finds into laws, theories and principles, uses them to predict what has not yet been seen, treats every idea as open to correction by evidence, and leans on rough estimation to judge whether an…

  • A theory goes a step beyond a law by explaining why the pattern happens at all, built on evidence gathered over time, which is what the atom…
