⚡ Veda Bites

The whole idea, one bite at a time

Veda Bites are swipeable micro-lessons — each one teaches exactly one idea. Here's a taste from this kit; the app has the full deck.

💡 Fact

Lodestones

Found, not invented.

Naturally occurring magnets, discovered in ancient times. The magnets old sailors used were based on them.

💡 Key Idea

Artificial magnets

Made rather than found.

The ones in a laboratory, a pencil box, a sticker or a toy. Artificial means made, not fake.

💡 Key Idea

Shapes of magnet

Three to name.

A bar magnet, straight. A U-shaped magnet, bent so both ends face one way. A ring magnet, round with a hole.

💡 Key Idea

The iron filings test

Make the pull visible.

Spread very small pieces of iron on paper, lay a bar magnet over them and tap. The pattern is the result.

💡 Key Idea

What the filings show

Ends crowded, middle bare.

Most gather near the two ends of the bar. Very few stick to the long stretch between them.

💡 Key Idea

Poles

The two ends have names.

They are the poles of the magnet, one North and one South. A magnet is not uniformly magnetic.

What you'll study, topic by topic

1

Magnets, and What They Pull

The first magnets were stones found in the ground. Today they are made, in bars, rings and U shapes, and they pull some materials strongly while ignoring the rest altogether.

  • Lodestones are magnets that occur in the ground, and they were known in ancient times.
  • People later worked out how to make a magnet out of a piece of iron.
  • Magnets in a school laboratory, a pencil box, a sticker or a toy are all artificial magnets.

Poles: Always Two, Never One

Iron filings pile up at the ends of a magnet and hardly anywhere else. Those ends are its poles, and no matter how small you break a magnet, it never has fewer than two of them.

  • Iron filings are very small pieces of iron, and they make the pull of a magnet visible.
  • The greatest number of filings stick near the ends of a bar magnet.
  • Very few filings stick to the rest of the magnet, between the two ends.

Finding Directions

Hang a magnet so it can turn freely and it always settles the same way, pointing north and south, because the Earth is itself one enormous magnet. A compass is that fact built into a small box.

  • Hung so that it turns freely, a magnet settles along the line running north to south.
  • The end pointing north is the North-seeking pole, or North pole; the other is the South pole.
  • It settles that way because the Earth is itself one enormous magnet.

Attraction, Repulsion, and Taking Care

Bring two magnets together and sometimes they pull and sometimes they push. Only a magnet can push another magnet away, which makes repulsion the surest test there is, and the pull works straight through wood, plastic an…

  • Unlike poles of two magnets, a North and a South, attract each other.
  • Like poles, two Norths or two Souths, repel each other.
  • Both ends of an iron bar are attracted by both poles of a magnet.

❓ Leveled MCQ practice

Try the smart MCQs from this kit

116 questions laddered from warm-up to topper-level, each with an explanation. A taste:

A magnet that occurs naturally in the ground is called a:

Beginner
A lodestone B bar magnet C compass D filing
Show answer & explanation

lodestone

The magnets old sailors used were based on these.

Magnets found in a pencil box, a sticker or a toy are:

Beginner
A lodestones B artificial magnets C non-magnetic metals D compasses
Show answer & explanation

artificial magnets

Artificial here means made rather than found.

Which of these is NOT one of the three magnet shapes named in the chapter?

Beginner
A U-shaped magnet B Ring magnet C Cube magnet D Bar magnet
Show answer & explanation

Cube magnet

Magnets can take several shapes, but those three are the named ones.

What is the name for a material that a magnet pulls towards itself?

Beginner
A natural materials B non-magnetic materials C artificial materials D magnetic materials
Show answer & explanation

magnetic materials

The materials that are not attracted get the opposite name.
