⚡ Veda Bites

The whole idea, one bite at a time

Veda Bites are swipeable micro-lessons — each one teaches exactly one idea. Here's a taste from this kit; the app has the full deck.

💡 Key Idea

Material

The word to know.

Whatever substance a thing was created out of. The notebook is the object; paper is the material.

💡 Fact

Everyday materials

A list you already own.

Paper, wood, cloth, glass, metal, plastic, clay. You handled most of them today.

💡 Key Idea

Objects mix materials

Rarely just one.

A pen is plastic, metal and ink together, each part chosen for what it can do.

💡 Key Idea

Lustre

The shine on a surface.

A surface that shines is described as having a lustrous appearance.

💡 Key Idea

Who has lustre

Usually, not always.

Materials with lustre are usually metals: iron, copper, zinc, aluminium, gold.

💡 Fact

Why a metal looks dull

It can fade.

Air and moisture dull the surface, so the lustre often shows only where it is freshly cut.

📖 Smart notes

What you'll study, topic by topic

1

Objects, Materials and Grouping

Every object you can name was made out of something, and that something is its material. Sorting materials by what they are like is not tidying up. It is how patterns get noticed.

  • Whatever substance a thing has been created out of is called its material.
  • Paper, wood, cloth, glass, metal, plastic and clay are all materials.
  • One object can be made from more than one material at the same time.

2

Lustre, Hardness and Seeing Through

Three properties that sort almost anything: whether it shines, whether it gives way under pressure, and how much light gets through it. Two of the three come with a warning attached.

  • A material whose surface shines is described as having a lustrous appearance.
  • Materials with lustre are usually metals, such as iron, copper, zinc, aluminium and gold.
  • Air and moisture can leave a metal dull, so lustre often shows only on a freshly cut surface.

3

Soluble or Not

Stir five things into five glasses of water and two of them vanish. That vanishing has a name, it applies to liquids and gases as well as solids, and a great deal depends on it.

  • Materials that disappear completely when stirred into water are said to dissolve in it.
  • Such materials are described as soluble in water. Sugar and salt are examples.
  • Materials that do not mix and stay visible after long stirring are insoluble in water.

4

Mass, Volume and Matter

Lustre, hardness and the rest belong to some materials only. Two properties belong to all of them, and anything that has both has earned a name of its own: matter.

  • Whether an object is heavier or lighter is measured by a property called mass.
  • A heavier object has more mass and a lighter one has less mass.
  • Mass is measured in gram, symbol g, and kilogram, symbol kg.
