⚡ Veda Bites

The whole idea, one bite at a time

Veda Bites are swipeable micro-lessons — each one teaches exactly one idea. Here's a taste from this kit; the app has the full deck.

💡 Key Idea

What a measurement is

Two parts, always.

A number and a unit together. Thirteen means nothing; thirteen handspans means something.

💡 Fact

The handspan

Its own name at home.

Called balisht. One of many body parts used for measuring: the arm, the stride, the foot, the fist, the fingers.

✏️ Example

What the class found

One table, five numbers.

Padma 13, Hardeep 14, Anish slightly more than 13, Tasneem slightly less, Deepa between 13 and 14.

💡 Key Idea

SI units

Why one system.

Several systems grew up in different places, and travel between them caused confusion. Countries agreed on one set instead.

💡 Key Idea

The SI unit of length

The one to know.

The metre. Its symbol is m, written in a small letter.

💡 Key Idea

How a metre is divided

By construction.

One metre is divided into 100 equal divisions, and each is a centimetre.

📖 Smart notes

What you'll study, topic by topic

1

Measuring With What You Have

People have always measured with the body: a handspan, an arm, a stride, a finger width. It works until two people compare their answers, and that is the moment a shared unit becomes necessary.

  • A handspan, called balisht, is one of many body parts people have measured with.
  • Grandmothers measure cloth by the arm, and farmers count strides or use the length of a foot.
  • Five children measuring one table by handspan got five different numbers.

Standard Units, and the Metre

Countries once used their own units, and travel turned that into confusion. They agreed on one set instead, the SI units, in which length is measured in metres and everything else follows by tens.

  • Different parts of the world used different systems, and travel between them caused confusion.
  • Countries came together and adopted one agreed set, the International System of Units, or SI units.
  • The SI unit of length is the metre, and its symbol is m.

3

Using a Scale Properly

Having the right unit is not enough. A scale has to lie along the object, be read from directly above, and be read twice when its zero end is worn. A thread handles anything curved.

  • The scale must be placed along the length being measured and touching it.
  • The zero mark should line up with one end of the object.
  • If the zero end is worn or broken, start from any other full mark instead.

4

Position, Rest and Motion

A position only means something once a reference point is fixed. If that position changes with time the object is in motion, and the path it follows sorts that motion into straight, circular or to and fro.

  • The position of an object is described with respect to a chosen reference point.
  • Without a reference point, a statement about position carries no information.
  • An object is at rest when its position does not change with time.

Every measurement of length consists of:

Beginner
A a unit only B a number and a unit C an instrument and a number D a number only
Show answer & explanation

Leave the unit off and the answer means nothing.

In the result 13 handspans, the word handspan is:

Beginner
A the object B the number C the unit D the instrument
Show answer & explanation

the unit

13 is the number that goes with it.

Five children measured one table with their handspans and got five different answers because:

Beginner
A handspans cannot measure tables B some of them counted carelessly C the table changed length D their handspans are different sizes
Show answer & explanation
