⚡ Veda Bites

The whole idea, one bite at a time

Veda Bites are swipeable micro-lessons — each one teaches exactly one idea. Here's a taste from this kit; the app has the full deck.

💡 Key Idea

The whole trick, in one line

There was never a chair.

Nothing was in the grandfather's hands. An invisible chair cannot be sat on because there is nothing there, so Mario was certain to fall, over and over.

💡 Key Idea

Why it had to be public

The falling was the test.

He goes down in front of a circle at break time. Every person in that circle then does something, and what they do is the answer the grandfather was after.

💡 Key Idea

A test that cannot be cheated

Nobody was asked anything.

Ask people whether they are your friends and they will all say yes. Mario never asks. He simply falls, and the answers arrive on their own.

💡 Key Idea

Prefix against suffix

Front flips, end shifts.

A prefix at the front usually reverses a word: kind becomes unkind. A suffix at the end usually changes its job instead: magic becomes magical.

💡 Key Idea

The two parts of the word

Root plus ending.

The piece on the end is the suffix, and what it attaches to is the root. Care plus -ful, friend plus -ship. Splitting a word shows you both.

💡 Key Idea

A changed job

Magic names. Magical describes.

One of them is a thing you can talk about. The other is what you say about a thing. They sit in different places in a sentence and cannot swap.

📖 Smart notes

What you'll study, topic by topic

1

The Story: The Chair

A grandfather hands a boy something that is not there, and sends him to school with it. What happens next sorts his friends for him.

  • Mario boasts constantly about how many friends he has and how friendly he is with everybody at school.
  • His grandfather bets him a fruit chaat that most of them are only companions or partners rather than friends.
  • Mario takes the bet at once and then realises he has no idea how to test it, so he asks for help.

2

Words at Work: Suffixes, and Words that Describe

What a few letters on the end of a word can do, which is not the same as what a few letters at the front do, and how describing words attach themselves to things.

  • A suffix is a small piece added to the END of a word, and the part it is added to is called the root.
  • A prefix usually reverses a word. A suffix usually changes the job the word does in a sentence.
  • Magic names a thing. Add -al and magical describes a thing instead, which is a different job altogether.

Speak, Listen and Write a Message to a Friend

Writing to somebody instead of about them, which changes almost everything, and saying which qualities you want in a friend without simply listing words.

  • A message is written to somebody, so it uses you, and that single change alters how everything in it sounds.
  • It has three parts: a greeting at the top, the body in the middle, and a sign-off with your name at the end.
  • The greeting names one person. Writing to three people at once turns a message into an announcement.

❓ Leveled MCQ practice

Try the smart MCQs from this kit

87 questions laddered from warm-up to topper-level, each with an explanation. A taste:

What does Mario show off about at the start?

Beginner
A How well he does in his school work B How many friends he has at school C How much his grandfather knows D How quickly he can run at break
Show answer & explanation

How many friends he has at school

Showing off here simply means boasting.

What does the grandfather claim about most of these people?

Intermediate
A That they are companions rather than friends B That they live too far from his house C That they do not go to the same school D That they are older than Mario is
Show answer & explanation

That they are companions rather than friends

Companion and partner describe people you know, and promise nothing.

Why does an invisible chair guarantee that Mario will fall?

Intermediate
A Because there is nothing there to sit on B Because he cannot see where he is going C Because it is too small for somebody his size D Because the magic only works at home
Show answer & explanation

Because there is nothing there to sit on

Not seeing it is not the problem. There being no chair is the problem.

Why does it matter that the chair came from somewhere out of sight?

Beginner
A Attics are the traditional place for odd things in stories B The grandfather wanted to be alone for a moment C A chair kept downstairs would have been too heavy D Mario was not allowed upstairs in the house
Show answer & explanation

Attics are the traditional place for odd things in stories

Fetching it from the attic makes the chair plausible before anybody looks closely.
