How to Sit the Half-Yearly Practice Paper

A short guide to the half-yearly paper: what each part holds, how long to give it, and a checklist of what it tests across the first seven chapters.

What you will be able to do

  • I can plan my time across the five parts of a paper
  • I can tell how much to write from the marks a question carries
  • I can support an answer with evidence from the chapter
  • I can check my paper before I hand it in

Full explanation

Three hours, eighty marks

This paper covers the first seven chapters, from maps and oceans to the Harappan cities and the roots of Indian culture. You have three hours.

Read it all through first

Read every question once, to the end. Put a tick beside the ones you can already answer. Begin with those, and your confidence will carry you into the harder ones.

Part A is twenty quick marks

Twenty questions of one mark each. Give about half a minute to each. If one will not come, leave it and go back at the end.

Part B wants a short answer

Twelve questions of two marks. Two sentences is usually right. Make two separate points, because the marks are usually one for each.

Part C wants three points

Six questions of three marks. Here you need three things, not one thing said three ways. Count them on your fingers before you write.

Part D is the passage

One question of six marks, in four parts worth one, one, two and two. Read the passage twice. Every answer is in it or follows from it.

Part E is the long answer

Two questions of six marks. Plan each in the margin first, in three or four words a point. A plan stops you repeating yourself.

Name your evidence

In this subject a reason is worth more than an opinion. Where you can, say which chapter, place or object your answer rests on.

Keep fifteen minutes back

Stop a quarter of an hour before the end. Check that nothing is blank, that Part C really has three points, and that names are spelled as the book spells them.

About this paper

This paper follows the pattern most schools use for a half-yearly test. It is not a board paper. Class 6 has no board exam.
