How to sit this paper
A short guide to the annual practice paper: what each part holds, how long to spend there, and how to check your work before you put the pen down.
Full explanation
Turn every page first
Look through the whole paper before you write a word. Count the questions and see where the big marks are. There are thirty-one questions and two hours for them. Nothing in here is new. Every question comes from the ten chapters you have already worked through this year.
How the paper is built
Part A has twenty questions of one mark each. Part B has nine questions of two marks. Part C has two big questions of six marks. This paper follows the pattern most schools use for an annual test. It is not a board paper, because Class 5 has no board exam.
Part A goes quickly
Read all four choices before you tick one. A choice can look right until you meet a better one below it. If a question holds you up, leave it and move on. Come back at the end. Half an hour is enough for the whole of Part A.
Part B wants your own words
One or two sentences will do here. Do not copy a line out of your book. Name the thing, and then give the reason. Two marks usually stands for two ideas, so read your answer back and count them.
Part C wants your thinking
The picture question is not there to look pretty. Find the part of the picture each question is about, and then answer it. The last question asks you to choose a side. Either side can score full marks. The marks come from your reasons, so plan three of them before you start.
Use what you have seen
Many answers get easier if you think of home. The bulb in your room, the cloth of your shirt, the season outside the window, the bird on the wire. A real example from your own street is worth as much as a remembered line.
Keep ten minutes for checking
Read your own answers through once. Hunt for a question you skipped. Check every number you wrote down. Then put your pen away. You have worked hard this year.
