How to Sit This Paper
A short guide to the annual practice paper: how the three parts are built, how to work through an unseen passage, how to plan the letter, and what to check at the end.
Full explanation
What this paper is
This is a practice paper for the whole English book. All ten lessons can appear. Most questions come from the second half, because you met those lessons last. It carries 50 marks and you get two hours. This follows the pattern most schools use for an annual paper. It is not a board paper, because Class 5 has no board exam.
How the paper is built
Part A has twenty questions of one mark each. Part B has nine questions of two marks. Part C has a passage you have never read and a letter to write. Each is worth six marks.
First five minutes
Read every question before you start writing. Do not begin at question one by habit. Begin with the part you feel surest about. Confidence early saves time later.
The unseen passage
Read the four questions first. Then read the passage twice over. Two of those questions want one word or one line. Two want a proper answer of your own. Point to the line in the passage that gave you each answer.
Answer in full sentences
Say the whole thing. A two-mark answer is one or two full sentences. The examiner cannot give marks for what is only in your head.
Plan the letter
Spend two minutes planning the letter before you write it. Decide the greeting, the two things you will say, and the closing. Then write it once, neatly, with no crossing out.
Watch the clock
Part A takes about thirty minutes and Part B about forty. Leave thirty minutes for Part C and ten for checking.
Check at the end
Read your paper again in the last ten minutes. Hunt for capital letters and full stops. Check every spelling you were unsure of. Count your sentences in the letter. A clean paper earns marks that a careless one throws away.
