Inverse Trigonometric Functions (Class 12): quick revision, 15 bites
All 15 revision bites from this kit, free and with no sign-up.
Inverse Trig Functions Give You the Angle Back
Trig gives ratios; inverse trig gives angles.
If $\sin\theta = x$, then $\theta = \sin^{-1}x$. The inverse function **undoes** the trigonometric operation and returns the angle.
Takeaway. $\sin^{-1}x$ is NOT $\frac{1}{\sin x}$ — it is the inverse function, not a reciprocal.
Principal Value Branches: Why Restrictions Exist
Periodic functions need a haircut to invert.
Trig functions repeat, so they are not one-to-one. We restrict each to a **principal value branch** where it is strictly increasing or decreasing.
Takeaway. Every inverse trig function has a fixed principal range — memorize these intervals.
The Reciprocal Identity: $\sin^{-1}x = \csc^{-1}(1/x)$
Inverse of reciprocal = reciprocal of inverse.
Takeaway. Reciprocal identities connect inverse pairs, but watch the sign conditions.
Complementary Angle Identities
Sine and cosine inverses add up to $\pi/2$.
Takeaway. Each inverse function plus its co-function inverse equals $\pi/2$.
Negative Argument Identities
Odd functions keep the minus; even ones don't.
Takeaway. Sine and tangent inverses are odd; cosine, cotangent, secant inverses need the $\pi - $ adjustment.
Sum and Difference Formulas for $\tan^{-1}$
Add two arctangents with one formula.
Takeaway. The $xy$ condition decides whether you add or subtract $\pi$ in the sum formula.
Double Angle Formulas for Inverse Trig
Two times the angle, one clean formula.
Takeaway. Double-angle inverse formulas convert $2\tan^{-1}x$ into a single inverse expression.
How to Simplify Inverse Trig Expressions
Substitute, simplify, then invert back.
Takeaway. Substitution turns complicated inverse expressions into simple angle manipulations.
Confusing $\sin^{-1}x$ with $\frac{1}{\sin x}$
The $-1$ is not an exponent here.
Takeaway. $\sin^{-1}$ means 'angle whose sine is', never 'one over sine'.
Forgetting the Principal Range When Cancelling
Cancelling too fast gives wrong angles.
Takeaway. Cancellation only works inside the principal range — check the interval first.
Worked Example: Evaluate $\tan^{-1}1 + \tan^{-1}2 + \tan^{-1}3$
Three arctangents, one clean answer.
Takeaway. The $xy$ condition in the sum formula decides whether to add or subtract $\pi$.
Remember the Principal Ranges with a Picture
One graph, six ranges, zero confusion.
Takeaway. Group inverses by symmetry: odd ones around $0$, even ones from $0$ to $\pi$.
Exam Pattern: What Gets Asked Most
Know what the paper actually tests.
Takeaway. Most questions test formula application plus correct branch selection.
Where Inverse Trig Shows Up in Real Life
From robot arms to GPS angles.
Takeaway. Whenever you know a ratio and need the angle, inverse trig is the tool.
The Notation $\sin^{-1}$ Was Once Controversial
Mathematicians argued over this symbol.
The notation $\sin^{-1}x$ is ambiguous — it could mean inverse or reciprocal. Many textbooks use $\arcsin x$ instead to avoid confusion, and this is the standard in most international curricula.
Takeaway. $\arcsin$, $\arccos$, $\arctan$ are unambiguous alternatives to $\sin^{-1}$, $\cos^{-1}$, $\tan^{-1}$.
