How to Sit the Annual Practice Paper
A guide to the annual Maths paper: what each part holds, why steps carry marks, and a checklist of the whole year.
What you will be able to do
- I can plan three hours across five parts of a paper
- I can show my working so that every step earns its mark
- I can check an answer by working it backwards
- I can revise ten chapters by solving, not by rereading
Full explanation
Three hours, eighty marks, ten chapters
This paper reaches across the whole year, from patterns to negative numbers. Most of it comes from the second half.
Revise by solving
Do not reread ten chapters. Work a few questions from each instead. In Maths you learn a method by using it, and reading a worked example is not the same as working one.
Part A is twenty quick marks
Twenty questions of one mark. About half a minute each.
Part B wants a short answer
Twelve questions of two marks. Name the step you took, then give the answer.
Part C wants the working
Six questions of three marks. The steps carry marks of their own, so write the sum you did and not only the answer.
Part D is the applied question
Six marks in four parts, worth one, one, two and two. Read the measurements twice before you use them.
Part E is the long answer
Two questions of six marks. Plan each in the margin first.
Show your working everywhere
An answer alone can earn one mark out of three. The same answer with its steps earns all three, and a wrong answer with sound working still earns some.
Mind your units
A length is in centimetres or metres, an area in square centimetres or square metres. Writing square is not optional.
Check by working backwards
If you divided, multiply back. If you found a perimeter, add the sides again. It takes seconds and catches most slips.
Keep fifteen minutes back
Stop a quarter of an hour before the end and check that nothing is blank.
About this paper
This paper follows the pattern most schools use for an annual test. It is not a board paper. Class 6 has no board exam.
