Linear Equations: The Core of Linear Algebra
Not all equations are linear—know the difference.
A linear equation in variables $x_1, x_2, \ldots, x_n$ is one that can be written as $a_1x_1 + a_2x_2 + \cdots + a_nx_n = b$, where the coefficients $a_i$ and constant $b$ are real numbers. Crucially, **variables appear only to the first power** and are not multiplied together.
Takeaway. Linear equations have variables to the first power only, no products of variables, and no nonlinear functions.
Matrix Inverse: Definition and Condition
Only square matrices can have inverses.
Takeaway. A matrix is invertible if and only if it is square and its determinant is nonzero.
Inverse of a 2×2 Matrix
Swap, negate, divide—quick inverse formula.
Takeaway. For 2×2 matrices, use the formula: swap diagonal entries, negate off-diagonals, divide by determinant.
Elementary Matrix: What Makes It Special
One row operation away from identity.
Why It Matters
Use **Linear Algebra: Exam-Focused Concepts and Problem Solving** in a practical way: - Think of one real scenario where it applies. - Ask what problem it helps solve. - Working view: This topic covers key linear algebra concepts tested in university exams, including linear equations, matrix inverses, determinants, vec…
