Intermediate
A not parallel to BC B equal to BC C perpendicular to BC D parallel to BC, by the converse of the BPT
Show answer & explanation

parallel to BC, by the converse of the BPT

$\frac35 = \frac6{10}$, so the ratios match.

Intermediate
A parallel to BC B parallel only if the triangle is isosceles C half of BC D not parallel to BC
Show answer & explanation

not parallel to BC

$\frac23 \ne \frac45$, so the converse does not apply.

Intermediate
A $\frac{AD}{DB} = \frac{AE}{AC}$ B $\frac{AD}{AB} = \frac{AE}{EC}$ C $\frac{AD}{AB} = \frac{AE}{AC}$ D $\frac{DB}{AD} = \frac{AE}{EC}$
Show answer & explanation

$\frac{AD}{AB} = \frac{AE}{AC}$

Only the first keeps the same form — part over whole — on both sides.

Q82. To prove that a line is parallel to a side, you should use

Intermediate
A the BPT itself B the converse of the BPT C the area formula D the angle sum property
Show answer & explanation

the converse of the BPT

Using the BPT would assume what is to be proved.

Intermediate
A 12 B 9 C 15 D 16
Show answer & explanation

15

Intermediate
A 15 B 9 C 10 D 12
Show answer & explanation

15

$EC = 9$ from the BPT, and $AC = AE + EC = 6 + 9$.

Intermediate
A always divides the other sides equally B is always parallel to a side C makes the triangle similar to itself D is not covered by the BPT, which needs distinct points on two sides
Show answer & explanation

is not covered by the BPT, which needs distinct points on two sides

It meets only one of the other two sides, so it divides nothing in a ratio.

Intermediate
A the BPT applies directly B all midpoints give parallels regardless C the triangle must be equilateral D both ratios are 1 : 1, so the converse of the BPT applies

Intermediate
A only starting from AB B whichever of the two sides you start from, if you stay consistent C only in isosceles triangles D only if DE passes through the centroid
Show answer & explanation

whichever of the two sides you start from, if you stay consistent

The theorem is symmetric in the two sides it cuts.

Show answer & explanation

A is false but R is true

R is true, but A mixes the two forms — a part over a part equated to a part over a whole — so A is false.

Q90. Assertion (A): The converse of the BPT can be used to prove two lines parallel. Reason (R): If a line cuts two sides of a triangle in unequal proportion, it runs parallel to the remaining side.

Intermediate
A Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A B Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A C A is true but R is false D A is false but R is true
Show answer & explanation

A is true but R is false

The converse needs the proportions to be equal, not unequal. The assertion stands, the reason is false.

Intermediate
A not parallel to BC B equal to BC C parallel to BC D a median
Show answer & explanation

parallel to BC

$\frac4{12} = \frac13$ and $\frac5{15} = \frac13$, so the converse applies.

Intermediate
A $\frac58$ B $\frac38$ C $\frac35$ D $\frac83$
Show answer & explanation

$\frac38$

AD and DB are 5 and 3 parts, so AB is 8 parts.

Q93. A line cuts AB at D with $AD : DB = 3 : 7$, and cuts AC at E with $AE : EC = 3 : 7$. This line is

Intermediate
A not parallel to BC B parallel to BC, by the converse of the BPT C parallel to AB D the perpendicular bisector of BC
Show answer & explanation

parallel to BC, by the converse of the BPT

The two ratios match, which is the converse's exact condition.

Q94. Assertion (A): A line through the midpoints of a triangle's two sides runs parallel to its third side. Reason (R): Both ratios are then 1 : 1, so the converse of the BPT applies.

Intermediate
A Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A B Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A C A is true but R is false D A is false but R is true
Show answer & explanation

Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A

Equal ratios of 1 : 1 satisfy the converse, which is precisely R's reasoning.

Q103. In two triangles, $\angle B = \angle Q$ and $\frac{AB}{PQ} = \frac{AC}{PR}$. Does SAS apply?

Intermediate
A yes B no — the equal angle is not the included one C yes, if the triangles are right-angled D yes, by AA instead
Show answer & explanation

no — the equal angle is not the included one

$\angle B$ does not lie between AB and AC, so the 'including' condition fails.

Q104. $\triangle ABC \sim \triangle PQR$ with $AB = 6$, $BC = 9$ and $PQ = 4$. Then QR is

Intermediate
A 8 B 6 C 13.5 D 4
Show answer & explanation

6

$\frac64 = \frac9{QR}$ gives $6 \cdot QR = 36$.

Q105. If $\angle A = \angle Q$, $\angle B = \angle R$ and $\angle C = \angle P$, the correct statement is

Intermediate
A $\triangle ABC \sim \triangle PQR$ B $\triangle ABC \sim \triangle QRP$ C $\triangle ABC \sim \triangle RPQ$ D $\triangle ABC \sim \triangle RQP$
Show answer & explanation

$\triangle ABC \sim \triangle QRP$

The letters must follow the matching, not the alphabet.

Q106. Which criterion applies when three pairs of sides are proportional?

Intermediate
A AA B SAS C SSS D RHS
Show answer & explanation

SSS

No angle information is needed.

Q107. Which criterion applies when two pairs of angles are equal?

Intermediate
A AA B SSS C SAS D none
Show answer & explanation

AA

No side information is needed.

Q108. A tree and its shadow, and a stick and its shadow, form similar triangles by

Intermediate
A SSS B SAS C AA, since the sun's rays make equal angles D RHS only
Show answer & explanation

AA, since the sun's rays make equal angles

Both have a right angle at the ground and the same angle of elevation.

Q109. Two isosceles triangles with equal vertical angles are

Intermediate
A congruent B not necessarily similar C equal in area D similar
Show answer & explanation

similar

The base angles are each $\frac{180° - \text{vertical angle}}{2}$, so two angle pairs match and AA applies.

Q110. The similarity criteria differ from the congruence criteria in that

Intermediate
A angles must be proportional rather than equal B sides must be proportional rather than equal C they need more information D they apply only to right triangles
Show answer & explanation

sides must be proportional rather than equal

The letters are the same; the side condition is relaxed.

Q111. Two triangles have $\frac{AB}{PQ} = \frac{BC}{QR} = \frac{2}{3}$ but nothing is known about CA and RP. The triangles are

Intermediate
A not yet shown to be similar B similar by SSS C similar by SAS D congruent
Show answer & explanation

not yet shown to be similar

SSS needs all three ratios, and no included angle has been given for SAS.

Q112. Assertion (A): Two triangles with one equal angle and two proportional sides must be similar. Reason (R): The SAS criterion requires the equal angle to be included between the proportional sides.

Intermediate
A Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A B Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A C A is true but R is false D A is false but R is true
Show answer & explanation

A is false but R is true

A is false because the angle may not be the included one, and R names exactly that missing condition.

Q113. Assertion (A): All equilateral triangles are similar to one another. Reason (R): An equilateral triangle has three equal sides.

Intermediate
A Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A B Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A C A is true but R is false D A is false but R is true
Show answer & explanation

Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A

Both are true, but equal sides within one triangle are not what makes two different equilateral triangles similar; their equal angles are.

Q114. $\triangle ABC \sim \triangle XYZ$ with $AB = 10$, $XY = 4$ and $CA = 15$. Then ZX is

Intermediate
A 7.5 B 5 C 9 D 6
Show answer & explanation

6

The scale factor is $\frac{4}{10} = \frac25$, so $ZX = 15 \times \frac25 = 6$.

Q115. Triangles with sides $6, 8, 10$ and $9, 12, 14$ are

Intermediate
A similar by SSS B similar by SAS C congruent D not similar — the third ratio differs
Show answer & explanation

not similar — the third ratio differs

$\frac69 = \frac8{12} = \frac23$ but $\frac{10}{14} = \frac57$.

Q116. Two triangles are similar with a scale factor of 3. The ratio of their perimeters is

Intermediate
A 9 : 1 B 1 : 3 C cannot be found D 3 : 1
Show answer & explanation

3 : 1

A perimeter is a sum of sides, so it scales by the same factor.

Q122. $\triangle ABC \sim \triangle DEF$ with $AB = 4$, $DE = 6$ and the perimeter of $\triangle ABC$ equal to 18. The perimeter of $\triangle DEF$ is

Advanced
A 24 B 12 C 36 D 27
Show answer & explanation

27

Every side scales by $\frac64 = \frac32$, so the perimeter does too: $18 \times \frac32 = 27$.

Q123. Two similar triangles have sides in the ratio 2 : 5. The ratio of their perimeters is

Advanced
A 4 : 25 B 2 : 5 C 5 : 2 D cannot be found
Show answer & explanation

2 : 5

Perimeter is a sum of lengths, so it scales by the same factor as the sides.

Q124. A photograph 6 cm by 8 cm is enlarged so that its shorter side becomes 15 cm. Its longer side becomes

Advanced
A 17 cm B 24 cm C 20 cm D 18 cm
Show answer & explanation

20 cm

The scale factor is $\frac{15}{6} = \frac52$, so $8 \times \frac52 = 20$.

Q125. $ABCD \sim PQRS$ with $AB = 8$, $PQ = 12$ and $RS = 9$. Then $CD$ is

Advanced
A 13.5 B 9 C 12 D 6
Show answer & explanation

6

$\frac{AB}{PQ} = \frac{CD}{RS}$ gives $\frac{8}{12} = \frac{CD}{9}$, so $CD = 6$.

Q126. Which condition makes two polygons similar all on its own?

Advanced
A neither condition alone is enough B equal corresponding angles C proportional corresponding sides D equal perimeters
Show answer & explanation

neither condition alone is enough

The square-and-rectangle and square-and-rhombus examples rule out each in turn.

Advanced
A 1600 m B 160 m C 1.6 m D 16 m
Show answer & explanation

16 m

$8 \times 200 = 1600$ cm, which is 16 m.

Q128. If $\triangle ABC \sim \triangle PQR$ and $\triangle PQR \sim \triangle XYZ$, then $\triangle ABC$ and $\triangle XYZ$ are

Advanced
A congruent B similar C not necessarily related D equal in area
Show answer & explanation

similar

Equal angles and constant ratios carry through, so similarity is transitive.

Q129. Two similar figures have a scale factor of $\frac{3}{4}$. A side of 20 in the first corresponds to

Advanced
A $\frac{80}{3}$ in the second B 15 in the second C $\frac{3}{80}$ D 20 in the second
Show answer & explanation

$\frac{80}{3}$ in the second

If first : second is $3 : 4$ then $\frac{20}{x} = \frac34$, so $x = \frac{80}{3}$.

Q130. Assertion (A): Congruent figures and similar figures are two entirely separate ideas with nothing in common. Reason (R): Congruence is similarity in which the scale factor equals 1.

Advanced
A Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A B Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A C A is true but R is false D A is false but R is true
Show answer & explanation

A is false but R is true

Congruence is the special case of similarity with scale factor 1, so the assertion is false. The reason says exactly that.

Q131. The order of the letters in $\triangle ABC \sim \triangle PQR$ matters because

Advanced
A it fixes the scale factor B it decides the perimeter C it shows which triangle is larger D it names which vertex corresponds to which
Show answer & explanation

it names which vertex corresponds to which

Reading the pairing from the letters prevents the commonest error in the chapter.

Q132. Assertion (A): Two figures that are similar to the same third figure are similar to each other. Reason (R): Equal angles and constant side ratios carry through from one similarity to the next.

Advanced
A Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A B Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A C A is true but R is false D A is false but R is true
Show answer & explanation

Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A

Similarity is transitive, and R gives the reason.

Q138. In $\triangle ABC$, $DE \parallel BC$ with $AD = x$, $DB = x - 2$, $AE = x + 2$ and $EC = x - 1$. The value of x is

Advanced
A 4 B 3 C 5 D 2
Show answer & explanation

4

$\frac{x}{x-2} = \frac{x+2}{x-1}$ gives $x^2 - x = x^2 - 4$, so $x = 4$.

Q139. In $\triangle ABC$, $DE \parallel BC$ and $\frac{AD}{DB} = \frac{3}{4}$. Then $\frac{AD}{AB}$ is

Advanced
A $\frac34$ B $\frac47$ C $\frac37$ D $\frac73$
Show answer & explanation

$\frac37$

$AB = AD + DB$, so the parts are 3 and 4 out of a whole of 7.

Q140. If $DE \parallel BC$ and $\frac{AD}{AB} = \frac25$, then $\frac{AE}{EC}$ is

Advanced
A $\frac25$ B $\frac32$ C $\frac23$ D $\frac35$
Show answer & explanation

$\frac23$

$\frac{AD}{AB} = \frac25$ means the parts are 2 and 3, so the part : part ratio is $\frac23$.

Q141. The perpendiculars DM and EN drawn in the proof

Advanced
A must be equal in length B bisect the sides C are parallel to BC D cancel out and do not appear in the result
Show answer & explanation

cancel out and do not appear in the result

They exist only to give the triangles a height, and divide out of both ratios.

Q142. A line cuts $AB$ at $D$ and $AC$ at $E$ with $AD = 6$, $AB = 15$, $AE = 8$ and $AC = 20$. Then $DE$

Advanced
A is not parallel to BC B is parallel to BC C passes through a vertex D bisects BC
Show answer & explanation

is parallel to BC

$\frac{6}{15} = \frac25$ and $\frac{8}{20} = \frac25$, so by the converse it is parallel.

Q143. In $\triangle ABC$, $DE \parallel BC$ with $AD = 2.4$ cm, $AE = 3.2$ cm and $EC = 4.8$ cm. Then DB is

Advanced
A 2.4 cm B 4.0 cm C 3.6 cm D 1.6 cm
Show answer & explanation

3.6 cm

$\frac{2.4}{DB} = \frac{3.2}{4.8} = \frac23$, so $2 \cdot DB = 7.2$.

Q144. Why can the BPT not be proved using similar triangles?

Advanced
A similar triangles have equal areas B the similarity criteria are themselves proved from the BPT C the BPT is about angles D similar triangles do not exist here

Advanced
A $\frac{AD}{AB} = \frac{AE}{AC}$ B $\frac{DB}{AB} = \frac{EC}{AC}$ C $\frac{AB}{DB} = \frac{AC}{EC}$ D nothing useful
Show answer & explanation

$\frac{AB}{DB} = \frac{AC}{EC}$

$\frac{AD}{DB} + 1 = \frac{AD + DB}{DB} = \frac{AB}{DB}$, and similarly on the right.

Q146. Assertion (A): In the BPT proof, the step $ar(BDE) = ar(DEC)$ needs a stated reason. Reason (R): Triangles on the same base and between the same parallels are equal in area.

Advanced
A Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A B Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A C A is true but R is false D A is false but R is true
Show answer & explanation

Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A

R is precisely the reason that must be written down, and omitting it loses the mark.

Q147. If $D$ and $E$ divide $AB$ and $AC$ in the ratio $k : 1$ for the same k, then DE is

Advanced
A parallel to BC only when $k = 1$ B never parallel to BC C parallel only when the triangle is right-angled D parallel to BC for every value of k
Show answer & explanation
